According to the recently released 2019 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report, almost half of breaches involve small businesses. A breach of any kind can be devastating for an organization, but for many small business owners, it can put them “out of business.” And while 42% of small and medium sized businesses plan to increase their cybersecurity investments in 2019, according to the Annual Top SMB Technology Market Trends report, they consistently cite security as one of their top IT challenges. Small businesses recognize the risk, but are focused on scaling the business, and may not be in a position to dedicate time-or money-to cybersecurity.
What’s more, the current post-perimeter, mobile-first, cloud-first world has only compounded this problem for small businesses, as most have adopted a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) environment. Employees use their personal devices to access work applications like G Suite, Salesforce, Workday, and others, allowing for greater productivity. However, this environment also opens up avenues of attack for malicious actors to exploit, as access to these applications on personal devices means that company data is exposed to any risky apps, connections, or content the end user may have put on that device for personal use. In fact, 67% of small businesses said they are less confident about the security of their mobile devices than other IT assets, including desktops and servers, according to the Verizon Mobile Security Index, 2019 -- Small Businesses report.
Small businesses need a security solution for the post-perimeter world, allowing employees to scale the business outside the traditional perimeter without putting its business at risk.
